Europe - the hub of all leading rail activities, is partly dependent on antiquated legacy systems that are becoming more difficult or nearly impossible to maintain. To accelerate digitization and thus secure the future of the rail industry, stakeholders must change the way the industry operates and focus on Asset management, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Digitalization of Freight Logistics Services and New Mobility Services.
Over the last decade module/system providers as well as rail integrators have globalized their engineering and manufacturing activities. Many have migrated 20 to 25% of their product engineering to Best Cost Country locations. We expect this trend to increase upwards of 35% in the coming years.
Cost aside, rail OEMs are also challenged by stringent project timelines. With operators seeking timelines to be halved, all players in the value chain need to leverage in-house capabilities along with 3rd party capability to meet stringent deadlines.
OEMs are under constant pressure to expedite their deliveries to meet stringent timelines. They no longer enjoy the luxury of micro-managing project execution within their supply chain. Hence, there is a greater demand for suppliers capable of offering turnkey solutions. These could be hardware providers - module/ system/sub-system, engineering service providers or technology providers.
To reduce the drag, OEMs seek partnerships with solution providers who have width and depth of capability, and can provide a wide range of solutions, across multiple geographies.
With the advent of digital, the Rail industry is expected to transform significantly to improve asset performance, reduce downtime and minimize inefficiencies. Business and operations models are also being remodeled to increase emphasis on a XAAS models (X-As-A Service).
Greater standardization across borders (Esp. Europe), a more integrated approach and emerging technologies will drive the Rail transport of tomorrow.
Services and Fleet segment is forecasted to grow significantly in the coming years. (EUR 19 billion - module providers and integrators). This will be accelerated by new business models, solutions from the digital space and service data analytics, such as predictive maintenance and real-time monitoring.
As business models shift from a product-only delivery to lifecycle management, the profit pool share for OEMs will no longer come from just selling new vehicles and modules, but will be a combination of selling the product as well as service and maintenance over its full lifecycle.
